Brennan Ritchie, is a reliable and talented player who looks to have a great future in the game.
Starting the season as a defenceman and moving to a forward position has been an adjustment for the seventeen year old, but the returns to the team have been high.
"Our defence minutes really got redistributed with some of the moves we made, and with some older guys really stepping up their game," said Natives' coach Bryant Perrier. "We had a responsibility to develop Brennan and we felt he would get more minutes up front."
So far, Brennan has done a good job up front, and is never far removed from the possibility of returning back to the defence corps, if need be.
"Brennan is gaining an invaluable opportunity to create a niche as a swing player who can play both," Perrier said. "At seventeen, it is a positive. As for his contributions, we are reaping the benefits of Brennan's abilities and versatility."
A solid student who is completing his grade twelve year, Ritchie hopes to play college hockey someday.
Coach Perrier believes that this is within the realm of Brennan's capabilities.
He believes the experience at forward will help Brennan achieve that end.
"The one area a young defenceman can struggle with is the area below the goal line in his own end," added he coach. "Brennan is learning that area from the inside out. As well, he is learning more about winning battles and the short game and puck movement."
"He is developing into a very good player."
The Natives are fortunate to have several young players on their roster - a fact that Coach Perrier says is invaluable to the team's efforts.
"The young guys keep things loose and they show good energy," the coach said. "Brennan is no exception. He is likeable and a positive part of our team."
Ritchie was a first round draft pick in the 2007 MJHL draft.
