Natives Land Another Big Tough And Talented Defenceman

June 2, 2010

Brett Nussbaum, an experienced junior hockey veteran from south of the border, will be joining The Neepawa Natives in the fall. Nussbaum was slated to play Junior A hockey in his home country this fall, but The Natives were able to acquire his services and are thrilled with with what he brings to the table.

The Neepawa Natives are pleased to announce that defenceman Brett Nussbaum has committed to join their squad for the 2010-2011 season.

The 6 foot 1, 210 pound native of Boca Raton, Florida is also a gifted forward.

Nussbaum is in his third season of junior hockey and was slated to perform in the high skilled EJHL next season, but some hard work and persistence paid off with The Natives acquiring him before the season started.

Last season, he put up over a point a game from the blue line and was named to the Hockey USA National All Star festival.

"Fast, tough, hard nosed, skilled, offensive," are the words used to describe Nussbaum, who comes highly recommended from college and junior coaches alike. "One of our contacts down south is Rob Tallas who is a coach with Florida right now in the NHL. He cannot say enough great things about Brett."

Nussbaum, who is closing in on playing NCAA hockey, is a player who will be able to play it any way the game plays out.

"Brett is a highly respected player down south," Perrier said. "He is a gifted player, but he is also a very, very tough customer. He is a very intimidating physical presence. People in Manitoba are going to really enjoy seeing his blend of size, ability and grit."

Perrier calls the recruiting process with Nussbaum "a tough one," due to the many opportunities he had south and north of the border.

"Brett had chances to join several teams in Canada as well," he said. "Teams in other provinces were involved in the process as well. So, we are pretty happy about landing him."

The Natives are also looking forward to Nussbaum's leadership and ability to handle the rigors of the junior hockey circuit - areas like travel, toughness, and the physical regimen.

"Brett is a very physically impressive player with a wide array of gifts," the coach said. "He comes in and gives us immediate veteran presence. It was a lot of work in acquiring and recruiting him. But, when the puck drops this season, we have another big, talented and tough defenceman who can really play the game."

"This is a big commitment for us and for our league."
